John Sheppard - Flyboy extraordinaire. Military Leader of the Atlantis Expedition. MENSA Smart. Great Hair.

Only the beginning of John's bad luck with bugs.
Evan Lorne – Major in the US AirForce. Team Leader. Artist. Destroyer of Ancient (and Wraith) ships.
Painting while chatting with Dr. Beckett. Getting ready to do some damage.
Getting ready to do some damage.
The foundation of John and Evan's relationship in canon is almost entirely based in how frequently they come to rescue each other. Despite each leading their own teams, Evan is the first out the 'gate to go looking for John whenever he goes missing and Sheppard is equally vigilant about rescuing Lorne whenever he is captured.
Condemned & The Lost Boys.
Evan Lorne's first acts on Atlantis, other than escorting over excited botanists, is to rescue John.

Evan is particularly upset when he learns that John is trapped on the island where prisoners are fed to the Wraith.
Evan also expresses his concern, in a round about way, when John's team is over due for a check-in.

Evan Lorne: Just that they (John Sheppard's Team) tend to get all caught up in whatever it is they're doing, and sometimes they don't check in. They forget how much you worry.
(Elizabeth looks at him.)
Evan Lorne: That we worry – collectively, I mean.
Elizabeth Weir: Yes, we do.
Coup D'etat.

John is fairly devastated when he believes that Evan has died.

He is quite relieved when he finds him alive, if captive by the Genii.
John Sheppard: (to Lorne): Way to be alive.
Evan Lorne: Thanks, sir! So, uh, have you come to rescue us?
John Sheppard: Well, until about a moment ago I thought were dead, but now that I see you speaking and breathing, yeah, I'm thinkin' about it.
Doppelganger.
When everyone on at Atlantis is afflicted by nightmares, Evan sleep walks to John and threatens to shoot him.

Evan Lorne: Don’t talk to him! Colonel Sheppard is a Replicator.
At first glance, this may not seem like an act of affection, but Evan was worried that John had been replaced by a replicator.

John tries to help Evan calm down (and not shoot him).
He was pretty apologetic later, after he had woken up.

Evan Lorne: I’m so glad no-one was hurt.
Travelers.
When John goes missing again, Evan takes out a fleet of jumpers to find him, leading John's team himself.

Ronon: Does it make a difference? Even if it was a fleet of hive ships, would it stop us from trying to get him back?
Evan Lorne: No.

Evan Lorne (into comm): Colonel Sheppard, this is Major Lorne. Is that you?
John Sheppard: That's affirmative, Major. It's good to hear from you.
Evan Lorne: Likewise, sir! Seemed like we came pretty close to losing you there.
Tabula Rasa.
When Evan can no longer remember who John is, he has his picture with the words "trust him" written on it.

Upon seeing the picture, Evan immediately relinquishes his command to John.
The Last Man.
Even in another timeline, General Evan Lorne cares enough about John to let Dr. McKay travel back to Atlantis to try and save him from being abandoned in the distant future.

The level of trust and commitment that John and Evan show, willing to walk into hive ships and Genii encampments or search the galaxy in a fleet of Jumpers, reveals how deeply John Sheppard and Evan Lorne care for each other. While rescuing a fellow solider may fall under the duties of a member of the military, the concern they show when the other is missing and the relief upon reunion belies the depths of their affection. Trust, respect and commitment are the foundations of love.
